Project Overview

We are building a community-driven roadmap for safer, more reliable, and equitable mobility across Charlottesville. This project brings together planning, equity, climate, and safety goals into one comprehensive mobility strategy.

Building connections that move our community: safe, sustainable, and for everyone to thrive.

What We’re Working on Now

City staff are completing several foundational pieces to prepare the full consultant‑led planning process:
Scoping and Existing Conditions

Reviewing current mobility policies, safety patterns, infrastructure, development trends, and equity considerations.

Internal and regional engagement

Interviews with subject‑matter staff, Albemarle County, TJPDC, and VDOT.

Draft Scope Review

Staff, leadership, and partner review leading to a final scope release this summer

Public Survey

A citywide survey to gather input on priorities, issues, and the future of mobility in Charlottesville. Survey to launch May 7–22, 2026.

Why This Work Matters

Every day, people in Charlottesville move through streets, intersections, and travel corridors that are not always connected, consistent, or predictable. Past planning efforts have produced strong modal strategies, but they don’t always align with one another or with today’s development patterns, safety needs, or City policies. The CMP provides the structure to:
  • Coordinate

multimodal strategies across departments and partner agencies

  • Prioritize

projects based on equity, safety, and system performance

  • Clarify

expectations for new development and infrastructure investments

  • Engage

the entire community in shaping mobility choices

  • Measure

    progress with clear performance metrics
